Kingswood remain unbeaten with 14-6 win over Ananda by Chris Dhambarage Defending champions Royal, Kingswood and Wesley notched up impressive victories in this week's Singer inter school under 19 'A' division league rugby tournament matches worked off during the weekend. Kingswood in fact virtually ensured themselves of winning the league title with a comprehensive 14 points to six win over Ananda College at Longden Place. This was also their third successive victory in the tournament and remain as the only unbeaten side after having played four games. Despite performing away from home they put up another gallant performance to turn the game in their favour scoring two splendid tries and conceding just a couple of penalties. Meanwhile Royal moved into the second place of the points table with an emphatic 18 points to 8 win over their traditional Rovals S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia at Reid Avenue. Royal's success had great significance as they also retained the Michael Gunaratne trophy for the fourth successive year. Royal simply looked the better side and proved their superiority by scoring one goal, one try and two penalties against their opponents one try and one penalty. This was Royal's third win in the tournament from five games with just one match against Isipatana to be worked off next week. Royal took a commanding 15-3 lead at half time and were well set to pile up the points in the second quarter. But instead S. Thomas' came back fighting to score a beautiful try in the second half while causing a major threat to their opponents. Wesley College continued their impressive run in the current season by outplaying St. Anthony's College by 18 points to 6 in a key match played at Royal grounds, Reid Avenue. The Wesleyites playing in front of their home crowd got their act together well in the second half to turn the game in their favour scoring three tries and one penalty. They were under pressure at the beginning and managed to score just a solitary try in the first half to lead 8-3 at half time. But they came back with an improved performance to score two more tries in the second half which shattered Antonians' hopes of winning the league title. The Antonians came into this game with a great amount of confidence having defeated their home town rivals Trinity College by a convincing margin. They also had a real chance of winning the title having notched up two impressive victories. But this time they faltered against a more talented side and managed to put over only two penalties. Trinity College had the satisfaction of inflicting a 25-7 defeat against their arch rivals Isipatana College in another inter school match played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy. This was certainly one of the best performances produced by the Trinitians in a match against Isipatana as they tasted success after a lapse of five years. Trinity will certainly consider this win as a good morale booster ahead of their Big Match against traditional rivals Royal although Isipatana are going through their worst period in recent times. Meanwhile St. Joseph's College moved closer towards winning the 'B' division league title as they finished on top of the points table with an unbeaten record. The Josephians have now registered four successive victories and have collected a maximum of 16.00 points. Their traditional rivals St. Peter's College jumped into the second place of the points table with an easy win over St. Sylvester's College Kandy last week. Science College, Mount Lavinia are tipped to win the 'C' division title having recorded three successive victories with Zahira College placed second with three wins but from five matches. Trinity College Kandy and Royal Panadura are battling for honours in the 'D' division tournament. |
