Nepal Govt ready for talks with Maoists

KATHMANDU, Tuesday (PTI) Nepalase government has decided to hold "reliable and result-oriented" negotiations with Maoist rebels for a peaceful settlement of the nine-year-long insurgency plaguing the Himalayan Kingdom, a senior minister said.

The government is ready for a negotiated settlement of the problem to restore peace in the country, Minister for Physical Planning and Construction Prakash Man Singh said here today.

A recent cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has decided to hold a "reliable and result-oriented" dialogue with Maoists, he told PTI.

The governmemt has also decided to seek cooperation of all political parties, civil society members and friendly countries in this endeavour, Chief Secretary Bimal Prasad Koirala said.

He said the government will play a pro-active role to initiate dialogue with the Maoists.

He, however, noted that the government has not yet decided on declaring an unilateral cease-fire prior to the talks.
