Coconut Development Authority launches its first regional fresh coconut auction The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) in association with the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) and the Coconut Cultivation Board launched its Regional Fresh Coconut Auction on July 20 at Kuliyapitiya with the participation of Desiccated Coconut, Copra and Coconut Oil Millers and Growers in the area. It was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Ministry of Planation Industries H.G. Abeywickrema, Chairman of the CDA Percy Wadugedara welcomed the gathering. The main objectives of the Action are to find a guaranteed market for coconut growers who are well maintaining their estates, for their quality nuts and cater to the growing needs of the Desiccated Coconut and Copra Millers who are in dire need of quality coconuts for their processing industry. Coconut growers are unable to obtain remunerative prices for their nuts due to the lack of a proper marketing strategy. The small and medium scale growers will benefit from this exercise. Follow up action by the CDA and NCCSL is also part of the exercise, to make the auction a success. There is an increasing demand for coconut and coconut products domestically and internationally. Export of kernel, shell and fibre products are rapidly increasing annually. Aggressive market promotional activities can trigger the domestic and export demand which in turn can boost the potential and ensure better price to the farming community, a press release from the CDA said. Secretary General NCCSL Neil Seneviratne, Chairman Coconut Research Board Dr. D.B.T. Wijeratne, Chairman Coconut Cultivation Board Dr. Jayantha Gunathilake, President, Coconut Growers Association Ranjith Dias, President, Desiccated Coconut Miller's Association Naleen Jayasinghe, President, Coconut Products Trader's Association and President, Coconut Products Broker's Association David Nalliah were present. |
