Profiles of leading cricketers Deveni Inima Author: Neil Wijeratne Deveni Inima (The Second Innings) is Neil Wijeratne's latest book. Much of his experience gathered when he was the Recorder of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka has gone into produce this highly readable book containing some of his contributions to newspapers. The articles cover the pre-test era, profiles of leading cricketers such as Vernon Prins, Mahes Rodrigo, Gamini Gunasena, Ben Navaratne, Fairlie Dalpathado, Makin Salih, Claude Vanderstaaten, Gihan Mendis and Laddie Outschroon. It also portrays the feats of lesser known cricketers such as Fred Perera, W. B. Bennet, Polycarp Wijesekera and H. T. Sardiel. The author also carries the reader with him to the legendary M. J. Gopalan's residence in Damoderapuram in Chennai, to the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club to meet its age-old scorer Sameer Dutt, to Eden Gardens to meet that famous spectator Anirban Maity, who held the placard reading "We are sorry, congratulation Sri Lanka" during the 1996 World Cup semi-final match between Sri Lanka and India. The book also describes how former Prime Minister Sir John Kotelawala opened bowling in an Indo-Ceylon filmstar cricket match and how another former Premier Wijayananda Dahanayake wrote prose on English player Bill Athey's marathon innings at the historic Galle esplanade. The author's first book Peradina Kelibima (1995) was hailed as a 'pioneer work in the annals of sports literature in Sri Lanka' by many critics. |
