| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Tea Board funds allegedly used to fund UNF election campaign by Sarath Malalasekera The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has allegedly uncovered a massive fraud at the Sri Lanka Tea Board during the UNF Government following a statement made by the Chief Internal Auditor of the Sri Lanka Tea Board. The CID filing a comprehensive report in connection with their investigations before the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne obtained permission to peruse the bank accounts of the Tea Board. The CID commenced investigations into the alleged fraud on a complaint made by Plantation and Industries Ministry Secretary J. Abeywickrema. Investigations revealed that the UNF Government had used the Sri Lanka Tea Board funds for their 2004 April general elections campaign. According to CID investigations, the Tea Board had paid Rs. 696,000 to a private TV channel for UNF propaganda during the last general elections. Investigations also revealed that the Tea Board had paid Rs. 65,000 to a weekend Sinhala newspaper and Rs. 156,400 to a weekend English newspaper for the UNF elections campaign. The investigators told court that the Tea Board funds had been used on a directive by a former Minister of the UNF government. On an application by the CID, the Judge directed them to file a further report in connection with their investigations on August 25, 2004. |
