J'pura University to re-open on July 28 The Sri Jayawardhanapura University will reopen on July 28, the Ministry of Education said yesterday. The University was closed on June 6 following the death of final year student Sampath Bandara in a clash between two student factions. Bandara was stabbed to death. The Education Ministry has appointed a special Security and Disciplinary committee chaired by Sam Wijesinghe (former Secretary General of Parliament) to devise ways and means of ensuring the smooth functioning of the University. This Committee will be mandated to oversee all matters connected to the security arrangements of the University, ensure discipline with the campus, closely monitor the situation within the University and to report regularly to the Vice Chancellor, Senate and the University Council, have a regular dialogue and discussions with the Proctor in connection with the disciplinary control. In addition a Deputy Vice Chancellor has been appointed for purpose of student disciplinary matters. A new internal Security structure has also been arranged with external support from the Police, the Ministry said. The other member of the Committee are: Prof. Savitri Goonesekara (Professor of Law), T. Anandarajah (former IGP), Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara (Director/Personal Institute of Management), Dr. J.B. Pieris (former Director/Post Graduate Institute of Medicine), Prof. Lakshman Jayatilleke (former Prof. of Engineering, former Chairman/NEC), former Director-General/National Institute of Education) and Prof. Rizvi Sheriff (Professor of Clinical Medicine). Six student leaders representing all unions in the university and two senior members of the academic staff, Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne and Narada Weerasuriya were appointed to the committee as other members. |
