Investment, Tourism and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Bandaranaike during his official visit to the People's Republic of China met Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Commerce Minister Bo Xilai on July 23. The talks were cordial and the Chinese Ministers fondly recalled the memory of late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and her many visits to China and emphasised the warmth and respect for her. Minister Bandaranaike assured the Chinese Government that there would be a special section of the Free Trade Zone assigned to the Chinese investors and in turn to induce more businessmen to invest in Sri Lanka. He emphasised the closeness of his family with the people and the Government of China and referred to the assistance to the Sri Lanka Government in the past. With China being an economic powerhouse in the world, they would play a positive and dynamic role in the development of the Sri Lankan economy in the fields of industry, tourism and investment promotion. The Minister also invited China to enter into joint ventures with Sri Lanka to revive the now redundant textile factories in Mattegoda and Thulhiriya for which they responded positively. Talks are expected to commence shortly between the two Governments. |
