4th Asian Junior Netball C'ships : Hosts Lanka favoured to win curtain raiser by Bernard Perera The defending champions and hosts Sri Lanka will take on India to in the opening game of the 4th Asian Youth Netball Championships at Sugathadasa stadium at 12.00 noon. This game will be played before the opening ceremony which is scheduled for 2.30 pm at the same venue with Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sripathi Sooriyarachchi and Mrs Sooriyarachchi as chief guests. The other two games scheduled to be played are Malaysia vs Thailand (2.30 pm) and Singapore vs Maldives (5.30 pm). In the first game the hosts have the advantage as champs playing on their homeden, with spectator support expected to favour them. Gishanthi Jayakody who leads the side is a player who participated in the last world netball championships. She will have services of three more seniors who are also in the national side. They are Sashi Nissansala, Angali Lokuliyanage and Sandani Bollegala. Gishanthi is presently the best shooter in the Sri Lanka side who makes good use of her height. This has become the most advantageous aspect for her shooting ability. According to Tamara Dharmakeerthi Herath the interim committee had all assistance coming from President Chandrika Kumaratunga for the event along with instinted co-operation coming from the Ministry of Sports. She said with these prominent support the Interim committee had no difficulty in finding sponsors for the event. The Championship will come to an end on July 30.
