Thailand to help develop fisheries, agriculture

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Government is scheduled to sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Thai Government today in Bangkok to uplift the country's agriculture and fisheries sectors.

On President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's directions, a team comprising Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Fisheries and Ocean Resources Minister Chandrasena Wijesinghe are taking speedy measures to facilitate these agreements with the Thai Government, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

As the initial step, a Sri Lankan delegation comprising Ministers Dissanayake and Wijesinghe are due to sign a series of MoUs with the Thai Government today in Thailand, he said.

The signing of these MoUs between the two countries are expected to develop agri-business activities and provide Thai technical expertise and equipment to develop the local agriculture sector.

Thailand has also pledged assistance to develop the local fisheries sector and set up several fisheries industries in Sri Lanka.

Thai Ambassador Karn Chiranond and a Thai delegation who met Minister Dissanayake also held extensive discussions on these MoUs which the two countries will sign, the spokesman said.

The Thai delegation has pointed out to the Minister that Thailand has an advanced post harvest technology and are willing to provide that technology to the Sri Lankan Government. They have also pledged to train Sri Lankan officers on these post harvest technologies. The delegation explained that Thailand was in an advanced stage on the production of agro and livestock equipment.

The delegation has pledged to extend their support to uplift the Sri Lankan agriculture and livestock sectors, he said. Meanwhile, the delegation has said that the signing of several MoUs between the Sri Lankan and Thai Government on July 28 will further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries.

The Government will import agricultural equipment worth US $ 20 million from Thailand following an agreement with the former UNF Government, but which has not been operative upto now, he said.
