The recent Ministry of Education initiatives to curb malpractices and corruption associated with school admissions and school administration, are being accelerated. In addition to new circulars sent to schools through the provincial authorities in the past two months, special instructions have been given to National School Principals on all relevant areas such as soliciting various donations and money for school admissions for all grades, states an Education Ministry press release. The Ministry Investigations Unit for Discipline and Financial Matters is now rapidly clearing the backlog of complaints received in the past few years. Already the preliminary investigations against several principals of leading schools have been completed and the Ministry recommendations for disciplinary action have been forwarded to the Public Service Commission as per the procedural requirements. In addition, the Prof. Savithri Gunasekera Committee appointed by the Secretary has invited suggestions from the public to improve the school admission system for 2006. A serious public awareness campaign to educate parents on this subject has also been launched by the Ministry. |
