Professor D. E. Hettiarachchi was an erudite scholar in languages who specialised in study and research in classical Sinhala. His academic career spanned nearly five decades in university professorship, editing the Sinhala Dictionary, Sinhala Encyclopedia, and university administration as a Vice Chancellor, and being the President of the Royal Asiatic Society in addition to several other responsible positions in civil society. He passed away fifteen years ago, 2004 is also his 95th year of birth. A commemoration meeting for the late professor is planned to be held on Monday 2, August 2004, commencing at 4.30 p.m. at the John de Silva Memorial Hall, Green Path, Colombo 7, states a press release issued yesterday. The meeting will be presided by Venerable Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera, the Chancellor of the Kelaniya University and Sanga Nayaka of Colombo and Chilaw districts. Other addresses will be on behalf of the Institutions that Prof. Hettiarachchi was closely associated with as follows: On behalf of the Sinhala Dictionary by Editor-in-Chief Prof. V. Vitharana; University of Peradeniya by Prof. K. N. O. Dharmadasa; Sinhala Encyclopedia by Deputy Editor Gamini Weragama; Sri Jayawardenepura University by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Chandima Wijebandara; and the Royal Asiatic Society by its past President Dr. S. G. Samarasinghe. The commemoration lecture will be on the subject "Prof. D. E. Hettiaratchchi's contribution to classical Sinhala language linguistic studies," by Prof. W. S. Karunatilleke, the former Prof. of Linguistics of the Kelaniya University and visiting Prof. of Cornell University. It is also planned, to award the Prof. D. E. Hettiarachchi Scholarship for post-graduate studies and research in Classical Sinhala, at the meeting. The prime objective of the scholarship is to encourage further research and study into classical Sinhala which was Prof. Hettiaratchi's field of speciality during his academic career. The meeting is open to the public. |
