Kumara leads golf team for SAARC C'ships in Lahore

by Richard Dwight

The Sri Lanka Golf team comprising Lalith Kumara (captain), Tissa Chandradasa, K. Prabahagaran, Jackie Dias and Kishani Vethavinayagam along with the Vice President of the SLGU - N.U.G. Silva, as Chief de Mission, left yesterday to participate at the 6th SAARC Golf Championships, to be held from July 30 to August 1 at the Lahore Golf Club, Pakistan.

Sri Lanka team which was placed second at the last SAARC Championships, is determined to improve on this against competition coming from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The 26 year-old Lalith Kumara shot to fame when in 1996 he won the All India Amateur Golf Championship after which there were the ups and downs, but stormed into be the current reigning champion 2003/04 of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Tissa Chandradasa has won quite a few titles and has sufficient experience having played golf in Dubai for 5 years, and was the former UAE No. 1 golfer. Tissa at 33 is presently attached to the RCGC and could be considered a seasoned golfer. K. Prabahagaran who is just 23 years old and employed at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is the current Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Champion.

In the ladies section, Jackie Dias at 25 has done well to have won the Ladies RCGC Championship last year and this year too, she also won the Ridgeway Cup and stroke play this year, having won the stroke play last year as well.

The up and coming lady golfer with much promise is the 15 year-old Kishani Vethavinayagam, a student of the Colombo International School, who within a short period of time since taking to golf has come down to a 10 handicap. She has won titles in the junior tournament for girls and was recently placed fifth in the British juniors played in Scotland.

The national team was trained in preparation for SAARC by Dian Abeywardene, the national team manager.
