Resounding win for Trinity

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports corr.

A second half blitz by Trinity College helped them to score a resounding 59 points (3 goals, 7 tries, 1 penalty) to 7 (1 goal) over the hitherto unbeaten Royal College, Panadura in their schools under-19 Division One Group D Singer trophy rugby tournament match played at Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekelle. At half time Trinity led 15-7.

With this win Trinity College with one more tournament match are virtually assured of the championship title having won all their tournament games. They had the points table now with 20 points in 5 games. They have amassed 312 points against 12 by their opponents and their line has been crossed just twice.

The match started on a furious note as both teams carried the unbeaten tag, a close game was expected. Robust play by Royal College Panadura early had Trinity in the check. Trinity scored early through a try by full back D. L. Jayewardene which went unconverted. But a little later winger Isuru Jayasena put over a penalty for Trinity to lead 8-0.

But Royal College, Panadura hit back through a fine try by flanker Sujeewa Sampath which was converted by fly half Anusha Hasaranga. Just before the short blast flanker Dhammika Senarath scored for Trinity with Isuru Jayasena adding the extra points.

Trinity who fielded players from their 'Colts' side in the first made six changes in the second half with their regulars taking the field. With that the complexion of the game changed and the lions accumulated the points with ease. They scored through B. L. Jayawardena (1), Michael Manickam (2), Y. Ching (1), B. N. R. Fernando (1), P. Wickremasinghe (1), Hasantha Mendis (2). Isuru Jayasena goalled two tries in the second half.

Gamini Jayasinghe refereed. Trinity won the under 15 game 28-10 and the under-13 game 15-0.
