Dr. Haththotuwa said that in a recent report published by the population division of the Ministry of Health, maternal and infant care continues to be a priority need with the maternal and infant mortality rates still at very high levels. In such a backdrop, a hospital exclusively dedicated for the care of women and newborns manned by a team of qualified, experienced and committed staff in a modern and well equipped environment will signal a new era of maternal healthcare. The hospital will provide 24 hour out patient, emergency and admission services. Ninewells operates a consultancy service which grants appointments by phone to consult Obstetricians, Gynaecologists, Pediatricians, Physicians, Endocrinologists, Dental Surgeons and Dieticians etc. The hospital will provide a range of clinics and services covering the entirety of women healthcare requirements. The services include preconceptional counselling, management of high risk pregnancies parent craft, antenatal and postnatal services, family planning clinics endocrinological clinic, well women menopause, cancer clinics and a variety of investigative laboratory services. The hospital has a well equipped operating theatre, a high dependency unit and a special care baby unit. In keeping with modern trends three separate labour rooms are available where the participation and encouragement of the husband during labour and delivery is recommended and most welcome. Emergency facilities such as piped oxygen, blood etc. will be routine features. The hospital has been designed incorporating the latest international standards and trends, very carefully planning the services and its layout. Years of intensive involvement in this sector of healthcare by Dr. Rohana Haththotuwa has contributed to the success of its design. Managing Director Chandrika Haththotuwa said that though available in most private medical institutions, Ninewells approaches these services carefully avoiding the commercial overtones present in such institutions. 'The exclusive nature of this field of care firstly eliminates the usual crowd, chaos and the general indifference found in a regular hospital. As most patients of Ninewells will seek services on a pre-planned basis, the general atmosphere will be one of relaxed orderliness. This quietness will be the first impact a visitor is greeted with on entry to the premises,' she said. Ministers Anura Bandaranaike, Nimal Siripala de Silva and President of the South Asian Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr. D. K. Tauk will be the guests of honour at the opening. |
