Law College launches LLM Degree in Trade Law

by Sarath Malalasekera

The launch of the Master's in Laws (LLM) Degree Programme of the University of Wales, is an event marking a milestone in the history of Sri Lanka Law College, being the oldest institution of legal education in the country, said Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC addressing the launching ceremony held at the Galle Face Hotel recently. The Chief Justice emphasised that competence, knowledge and ability cannot remain fixed to the time of entry to the legal profession.

"We have to respond to the growing demand for professional expertise. With this objective five years ago when I assumed the office as Chief Justice we decided to move beyond our traditional role and embark on a program of continuing legal education. Needless to state, that such education is required in many areas. But, considering our limited resources we decided to concentrate on one main area.

We chose the area of Commercial Law considering, the expansion of global trade, and the rapid diversification of International and Securities Markets", he said.

"We are indeed happy that we have linked up with Holborn College of London to prepare students in a program leading to a Master's in Law Degree that will be awarded by the University of Wales. This course of action has tremendous advantages.

Ordinarily a Sri Lankan student would have to incur and enormous cost running into several million of Rupees to follow a course of study in the University of Wales leading to a Master of Law Degree. The student not only has to meet the expenditure for the stay in England which is much higher than in other countries but would also have to be away from his place of work and family for a minimum period of about one year.

The course has an advantage of involving a much lower expenditure with the total cost to students being less than Rs. 500,000 for the entire program. The lectures and seminars would be held in a way to accommodate persons who are in employment.
