Ven. Chandasiri Thera honoured Ven. Pallebage Chandasiri, Chief incumbent and the president of Oregon Buddhist Vihara in Portland and the Secretary Maithree Vihara Buddhist Meditation Centre California was anonymously appointed as the Chief Sangha Nayaka of North America by the respected executive Council headed by the Most Venerable Mahanayake Thera of the Maha Vihara Wamiska Syamopali Mahanikaya, Malwatta Chapter. Ven. Chandasiri Thera was born on January 05, 1943 at Pallebage in Kegalle. In lay life he hailed from a family which cherished traditional cultural values. In his spiritual calling he shone as a bright star in the firmament of the illustrious Sangha order. He was ordained as a novice on February 28, 1956, at Pinikahana Buddhist Center, Kahaduwa, Galle by Ven. Ambana Sirinivasa Maha Thera. Ven. Chandasiri Thera received his higer ordination in 1962 at Kandy, Malwatta Maha Vihara, Siam Fraternity of Theravada Buddhist Order. As a young Bhikkhu he got his secondary education at Vidyaloka University Pirivena, Galle. From there he entered University of Vidyodaya (currently University of Sri Jayawardanapura) where he obtained BA in 1969 and MA in Buddhist studies from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, in 1992. After his graduation he started his service as a teacher both in Monastic and government schools for 21 years. After his early retirement he served as the Principal of Vidyaloka University Pirivena. He departed for Los angeles in August 1993 on the invitation of Maitri Vihara Buddhist meditation Center. Since then Ven. Thera is living in California doing his service not only to the Sri Lankan community but also foreigners as well, both in USA and Canada. As a recognition of his service for the Buddhism here and the USA the supreme council of Malawatte Mahavihara has appointed Ven. Chandasiri Thera as Chief Sangha Nayaka of North America with the title of "Dharmakeerti Sri Rahula Sirinivasa". There will be a credential-granting ceremony on July 28,2004 at 3. p.m. at Malwatta Mahavihara, Kandy. The ceremony shall be presided over by the Most Venerable Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatta chapter, and attended by the Venerable Anunayaka of the Executive Council including other council members. The Hon. Prime Minister and the Hon. Speaker of the Parliament and Hon. Niranjan Wijeratne Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa will also attend. |
