by Thilak Ekanayake "The Pirivena Education today is job-oriented and pay less attention to the study of Pali, Sanskrit and the Three Pitakayas (Buddhist canonic studies). Certain Buddhist monks nowadays obtain visa to propagate Buddhism in foreign countries, but once in foreign soil they shed the yellow robe and work in garages as mechanics or sweep the roads to earn money." This observation was made by the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Maha Nayaka Thera, the Maha Nayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter, when he delivered his speech from the Chair at the recent Prize Giving and Certificate Awarding ceremony at Palipana Sri Chandananda International Buddhist Centre, Kandy, where the Buddhist monks who were winners of All Island Inter-Pirivena Language and Literature Competition were awarded prizes and certificates. The ceremony was organized by Ven. Henepola Nandasiri Thera, the Central Province Assistant Director of Education (Pirivena) and the Executive Council of the Central Province Pirivena Education. Addressing further, the Maha Nayaka Thera stated that it was beneficial for the propagation of the Dhamma to possess the knowledge of a variety of languages including English, but at the same time, the Buddhist monks should thoroughly study and understand the Dhamma through Pirivena education, if they were to be of service to the country and its people, thereby commanding a high respect as Buddhist monks. Director of Education (Pirivena) Ven. Badovita Pannarama Thera, Education Ministry Additional Secretary K. W. E. Karaliyadda, Ven. Henepola Nandasiri Thera and several other Buddhist monks addressed the gathering. The Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Maha Nayaka Thera and several other invited Chief Monks gave away the prizes and certificates. |
