12 rebels, Indonesian soldier die in latest Aceh violence BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, Monday (AFP) One government soldier and 12 separatist rebels were killed in the latest violence in the conflict-hit Indonesian province of Aceh, the military said Monday. An Indonesian infantry officer was shot dead in a clash with rebels from the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in the province's Bireuen district, late Saturday, military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Asep Sapari said. A rebel was also shot dead in the same encounter, he added. On Sunday, six guerrillas were shot and one soldier wounded in a raid on a suspected rebel hideout in Aceh's Pidie district while three rebels were shot dead by police and one captured alive in the same area, Sapari said. Troops also killed two other guerrillas in separate clashes in North and East Aceh Sunday while soldiers captured another rebel in the province's southwest, he added. A total of 14 rebels also surrendered to the authorities in seven separate locations in West Aceh on Sunday, Sapari said. The military launched a major operation to crush the Free Aceh Movement in May 2003 after the collapse of a brief truce. Military and police figures show about 2,200 rebels have been killed since then. Rights groups have said many of the dead are ordinary civilians. GAM has been fighting for independence since 1976. |
