Bali bombers get jail switch to be nearer their families JAKARTA, Monday (AFP) Seven men convicted for their roles in the October 2002 Bali bombings have been allowed to switch jails on "humanitarian" grounds to relocate them nearer their families, Indonesian jail officials said Monday. The seven were moved Sunday from Bali, where 202 people perished in the October 2002 nightclub attacks, to East Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo, said Tulus Wijayanto, director of Bali's Kerobokan high-security jail. "They are being flown to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan and will be put at the Balikpapan state prison," Wijayanto told AFP. "The move was made following the demand of the families of the detainees. It is purely a humanitarian move." Wijayanto said the seven had originally been arrested in East Kalimantan and were serving terms of three to five years. The men were among 14 seized in the province for helping hide two key Bali bombers, Ali Imron and Utomo Pamungkas, alias Mubarok, as they fled police in the wake of the attacks. |
