DMS to sponsor August monthly medal of RCGC DMS Garment Technologies (Pvt) Ltd., is to sponsor the August monthly medal of the Royal Colombo Golf Club, for the seventh consecutive year in collaboration with their principals Gerber Technology USA, General Sewing Dara UK and ZSK Germany. Over 140 members are expected to take part in this event to be held on 7th August 2004. Originally known as the Colombo Golf Club, and founded on 13th March 1879, the Galle Face Green, was the equally shared landscape for many other British sports such as cricket, rugby, football, hockey, tennis and horse racing. The first anniversary was solemnly confirmed at a meeting by nine office-bearers on 13th March 1880. The committee in 1894 proposed to obtain new land for the Golf Links in the vicinity of Cinnamon Gardens or its close environs and a special committee being given the authority to look into the possibility of obtaining the then "Model Farm" as links. This proposed land which had been handed over to the government by philanthropist Charles Henry de Soysa for agricultural purposes was named "Alfred Model Farm". Thus the Ridgeway Golf Links on Model Farm Road, Borella was declared open by Governor, Sri Joseph West Ridgeway on 9th December 1896. Originally the course had only 9 holes and by 1899 it was extended to 18 holes The Colonial style club pavilion became a reality with its construction commenced in 1904 and completed in October 1905. The Colombo Golf Club received its Royal Charter from the British Crown in 1928, and ever since it has been known as the Royal Colombo Golf club. Archival records of the club reveals that the first competitive Trophy was presented in 1887 and it still remains on the Golfing Calendar of the Club. The Calcutta silver medal presented in 1888, by the Calcutta Golf Club, is a permanent challenge medal continued to be competed by the present day golfers as well. Over 140 members are expected to take part in this years tournament according to a news release of the Royal Colombo Golf Club. Mr. Michael Matthysz, General Manger/Director of the sponsor, DMS Garment Technologies (Pvt) Ltd., is hopeful in building up the trust and encouragement given during the last seven years to the club, while looking forward to further encourage the avid future golfers of Sri Lanka.
