Forum to promote global ICT sector by Irangika Range The Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO) will organise the second international ICT forum under the theme "ICT Business and Development", in Sri Lanka from September 20 to 21. The CTO's Annual Council Meeting will also be held at the forum where delegates from over 30 member countries and representatives of its sector members, including all commonwealth ICT governments, ministers, regulatory agencies fixed and mobile operators and other service providers worldwide will be present. The Forum will organise the exhibition with all ICT facilities. The event will be hosted by the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) at the Trans Asia Hotel. The CEO of CTO Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah said the forum will provide good opportunities to promote the global ICT sector and as a strong member of CTO, Sri Lanka would gain knowledge about modern developments of the ICT sector. "Sri Lankan ICT companies including Internet service providers, IT software companies, mobile and fixed operators and satellite communication companies can use this forum to showcase their progress in the ICT sector," he said. He said various ICT policies and regulations will be presented at the forum and they would discuss how national and regional governments facing the challenge of ICT could achieve their development objectives. "The CTO's ICT Road Map will help to get all nations under one project. Countries that want to develop the ICT sector can use the ICT Road Map where we look at the respective national ICT plan and help them to implement it. The ICT professional data base system will be launched and it will collect information of all IT professionals in CTOs member countries. We hope to introduce a C-gateway project to promote the maritime industry in the world. The monetary component will help to eliminate all drawbacks in the shipping industry. Different case studies examining the latest development plans in e-Government, e-Commerce, e-Health, e-Learning and e-Agriculture will be discussed at the forum," Dr. Spio-Garbrah said. Dr. Spio-Garbrah said today ICT is moving rapidly in the world. People can see or exchange messages almost immediately. The e-government provides information for the public sector specially in rural areas. People can access passport, medical certificate and insurance policies through the website," he said. "The monopoly should be removed in the sector to get more benefits. More investments such as more wireless phone companies should be in the ICT sector to make it competitive. Our visit to Sri Lanka is partly to develop the ICT sector by recognising the needs of the country, regulators, policies, challenges, problems and achievements. As a responsible organisation, we are committed to solve the problems of our member countries. We have implemented development and training programs since 1985 and have trained around 30,000 ICT professionals the world over including Sri Lanka," he said. |
