Mobile Communications Research lab to be set up

Dialog GSM together with the University of Moratuwa and Uni-Consultancy Services (UNIC) entered into a landmark agreement to set up Sri Lanka's pioneer Mobile Communications Research Laboratory in Colombo.

CEO of Dialog GSM Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Vice-Chancellor University of Moratuwa Prof. Dayantha Wijeyesekera, Dean, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa Prof. Ananda Jayawardena and Member of the Board of Directors, (UNIC) signed the agreement.

CEO of Dialog GSM Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya told a press conference last week that he had no doubt that the convergence of academic and commercial thinking and creativity as espoused in the objectives of this initiative will further strengthen Sri Lanka's regional supremacy in the mobile communications arena".

Vice-Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, Prof. Dayantha Wijeyesekera said "This research laboratory is another development in the University". "Graduates of our University are highly valued by the local information and communication technology industry. Undergraduates of our University will benefit from the research laboratory when they go to the industry," he said.

Deputy Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Upcountry Development Rohitha Abeygunawardena said development in the IT sector is very important for the country's development". The government will always assist these development projects conducted by private sector," he said.

Dean, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa Prof. Ananda Jayawardena said this laboratory, the first of its kind is dedicated to carry out research which will have direct and immediate application in the industry". "It will contribute to the national economy by assisting local business through modern communications technologies," he said.

The activities of the Research Centre would be focused on stretching the frontiers of applied mobile technologies through research and development pertaining to the initiative of national and regional significance. The laboratory will have technology transfer arrangements with international bodies.

Dialog will precipitate this project by funding, accessing the latest technology with expertise. The University will provide academic excellence and creative thinking for the joint initiative while (UNIC) brings the flexibility for the University to work effectively with the industry.
