Jiffy Products launches innovative horticultural products for international market Jiffy Products S.L. (Pvt) Ltd (JPSL) has launched its portfolio of innovative plant propogation substrate products made out of coir fibre pith for the international market. JPSL is the local subsidiary of US $50 million Norway-based multinational, Jiffy International AS - a company that has extensive global investments in the manufacture of plant propagate substrate systems. In Sri Lanka, the company's operations exclusively involve the manufacturing of coir fibre pith products, which is marketed worldwide as the "Jiffy-7C" Pellet. This product is a plant propogation material which initially resembles a dried organic disc enclosed in a net. When water is added to the "Jiffy-7C" Pellet, it expands to roughly seven times its size and takes on the properties of a plant propogation substrate. Inside the pellet seeds or plant cuttings can be placed and grown so that they can reach their peak maturity at the best quality. The Jiffy Group, which is one of the world's leading supplier of plant propagation substrate systems for the horticulture industry has manufacturing plants in Holland, Norway, Denmark, USA, Canada and Sri Lanka, in addition to sales offices in England, Germany, Kenya and France. The group also assigns agencies and representatives who sell their products through specialty horticulture stores in several countries that do not have Jiffy manufacturing concerns nor sales offices. Jiffy's Sri Lanka operations - commissioned in January 2004 - are in the Mirigama Export Processing Zone within Sri Lanka's Coconut Triangle where the main raw material - coir fibre pith - is abundantly available. This facility's entrance into the Sri Lankan market has resulted in the creation of employment for over 300 people. Jiffy has also provided Sri Lanka with benefits that will evolve into the future: The plant brings along with it a significant amount of technology which allows for value addition to raw materials and the Sri Lankan labour force learning new technology and horticultural skills. Jiffy International AS's President, Arstein Knutson, as well as the company's Executive Vice President, Dagfinn Andersen, and Director of Operations, Tormod Botheim were present. |
