ISO, HACCP certificates for Bogawantalawa Plantations Bogawantalawa Plantations Ltd. (BPL) reached a historic landmark by receiving ISO and HACCP certification. BPL is renowned the world over for its high quality teas and own the Flagship Brand, Bogawantalawa and Ceylon Tea Gardens. CEO of BPL Sarath Fernando said this was an achievement of the employees and not the company. While thanking the employees, for their cooperation to achieve this certification, he singled out three individuals who spearheaded this project - Parakrama Dasanayake, (Director - Operations), Ana Madawala (RGM) and Athula Gunewardena (RGM) who will share this achievement with their employees. He was addressing a ceremony, attended by Saied Ossan, S.B. Smith and Athula Bowatte who represented BVQI, (The Certifying Agency) Praguna and PHDT (Plantation Housing Development Trust). In receiving the ISO and HACCP Certification, buyers' perception of Bogawantalawa Teas would be enhanced and create a greater bonding with the company and the people. When the BPL logo also carries the ISO and HACCP Certification, it would be possible to levy a premium price for it. This would in fact be a welfare premium, since the added sum will be used to improve the living and literacy conditions of workers on the estates, he said. He said a computer training centre would be set up at the New Valley to develop computer literacy among employees and staff. Children would also be given an opportunity to become computer literate. Head of HRD Ana Madawala explained the manner in which he recognised the processing centre to achieve this goal. He had to introduce certain management methods to convert the traditional methods to black tea to CTC. In order to achieve this, attitudes and objectives of employees had to change. The Management tool he utilised for this purpose were 5S and Kaizen. |
