Pakistan blast kills four paramilitary troops

QUETTA, Pakistan, Monday (Reuters)

Four paramilitary troops were killed and at least as many wounded when a blast destroyed their vehicle in southwest Pakistan on Monday, a provincial government official said.

The troops were escorting employees of a state-run oil and gas company when their vehicle was hit by a landmine or some other explosive device, said Abdul Rauf, home secretary of the Baluchistan province.

The blast occurred near the town of Sui, 280 km (175 miles) southeast of Quetta, the provincial capital, he said.

"We are trying to determine whether it was a landmine."

Baluchistan, one of Pakistan's poorest provinces, has seen a spate of attacks on paramilitary troops and state-owned oil and gas installations by suspected tribesmen fighting for share of benefits from exploration.

Officials say violence in Baluchistan is not connected with an on-going military campaign against al Qaeda-linked militants in the semi-autonomous western tribal regions of Pakistan..
