by Manjula Fernando The Education Ministry's Secondary Education Modernisation Project (SEMP) will receive another Rs. 5,000 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to extend its project period till 2010. SEMP Director Anura Dissanayake said success of the SEMP's initial project, aimed at improving the State's secondary education sector, has impressed the ADB into releasing a second tranche to continue the project for another five years. "The project was started in 2001 with an initial funding component of Rs. 7,600 million to modernise the secondary education sector in government schools with a major share for IT development," the project Director said. The initial project was to end in 2005. He said Ministry Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel will leave for ADB headquarters in Manila to sign the new agreement in mid September. "The initial SEMP project targeted the establishment of 800 Computer Learning Centres, 300 Advanced Level laboratories, Multimedia Centres in 2,300 schools and 31 National Environment Education Centres (NEEC)," Dissanayake said. "Through NEECs we hope to integrate the topic of environmental studies into all subjects to ensure that this important subject will not be missed by anyone." Creation of a sustainable society which is environmentally conscious and responsible towards society is the objective of the NEECs. School Based Assessment, a new concept for evaluating the performance of GCE OL and AL students is also being introduced under the SEMP. This has already been implemented in the GCE Ordinary Level. AL candidates will receive their SBA results with the national examination results from 2005. |
