August 23, Colombo - The Anti Narcotics Bureau says drug addicts in Sri Lanka spend around 50 million rupees per day to sustain their habit. More than 100,000 people in the country are reported to be addicted to drugs. The Bureau said that 50 per cent of prisoners are sentenced for drug-related offences. Among them are 48 prisoners on the death row. The Director of the Anti Narcotics Bureau, Senior Superintendent of Police Pujitha Jayasundera, said there are also 89 prisoners serving life sentences for drug offences. Ninety-seven percent of heroin is smuggled into the country from India. The police said Sri Lanka also serves as a transit centre for the international drug trade. (Courtesy Colombo Page) |
