The Muslim community should be given due representation during future peace negotiations between the Government and the LTTE. The French Government's influence is vital said Secretary General and Leaders' Council Chairman of the Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) Hafir Nazeer Ahamed during a discussion with Deputy Head of Mission of the French Embassy in Colombo, Gael de Maisonneuve last week. Ahamed, heading a three-member delegation, briefed the French diplomat about his newly formed political party's aims and objectives towards establishing unity and understanding among various ethnic groups in the country. Speaking of the present political situation, Ahamed said that DUA was of the opinion that an early resumption of peace talks should take place to avoid another war situation in the country. He stressed that the authorities should ensure that foreign funding should be equally distributed in the rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in the North and East. He reminded of the occasional attacks on Muslims in the east during the existing ceasefire agreement. This, he pointed out, should be dealt with immediately to avoid clashes among various other communities in the future. Ahamed urged the French Government to extend humanitarian assistance in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the North-East Muslims who suffered heavily during the recent ethnic disturbances. |
