by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) yesterday launched a strike in the Wayamba Province urging the Provincial authorities to resolve the salary anomalies in the health sector. However, two main trade unions in the health sector namely the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) and the Public Services United Nurses' Union (PSUNU) did not join in this trade union action. "If Health authorities fail to make a positive response, we will expand our strike to the Sabaragamuwa Province today, "Alliance's spokesman Ravi Kumudesh told the Daily News yesterday. The alliance also threatened to extend the strike to the North-East province by August 25. The alliance was demanding the Provincial authorities to release funds for payment to resolve the salary anomalies according to a circular issued from the Government. He said the Provincial Chief Secretaries of these provinces had failed to make due payment while Cabinet approval had been granted for these payments and the Treasury had released necessary funds. "The Political leadership of these provinces had agreed to our demands, but officials are not carrying out the orders given to them, causing severe hardships to our members," Kumudesh said. The alliance's main demand is to resolve the salary anomalies faced by the health employees coming under the purview of the provincial councils. "We are urging the authorities to implement circular 2/1/2004 seeking to resolve the salary anomaly in Provincial Councils," Kumudesh added. |
