by Wasantha Ramanayake The Supreme Court yesterday concluded hearing submissions on three urgent Bills before it. The Court's determination will be duly communicated to the President. The President had sent the three urgent Bills for the determination of the Supreme Court.They are " A Bill to streamline the Tax Amnesty, Inland Revenue Special (Amendment) Bill and the Tobacco Bill. The Attorney General made submissions with regard the Bills before the Supreme Court, yesterday. The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC, Nihal Jayesinghe and N.K. Udalagama. Additional Solicitor General P.A. Ratnayake PC submitted that Tax Amnesty Act was in force from July 01 to August 31, 2003. This was a period of virtual lawlessness with regard to the tax payments with over 40,000 tax dodgers evading paying taxes. He submitted that the Bill seek to repeal the Tax Amnesty Act and to streamline the Tax Amnesty. He submitted that if the Bill was passed in the Parliament the previously granted tax amnesties would become void. Senior State Counsel Demuni de Silva submitted that the Tobacco Bill sought to impose restrictions in connection with the import of tobacco. State Counsel Uditha Egalahewa made submissions in respect of the Inland Revenue Special (Amendment) Bill. |
