Gampola special correspondent

The Central Province St. John Ambulance Brigade celebrated its 25th anniversary on August 10 at the auditorium of Zahira National Muslim School, Gampola.

The Commissioner, Central Province, St. John Ambulance Brigade and Child Specialist Gampola Teaching Hospital, Dr. J. M. Nilam said that this voluntary organisation was existing in Sri Lanka since 1906 and in Central Province for over 25 years.

The members and officers of this organisation render their services for the benefit of the organisation without gaining any financial or other benefits but for the mental satisfaction. This organisation is providing first aid services during 'Dalada Perahera' in Kandy, Sri Pada season and various other public gatherings on request.

Main target of St. John Ambulance Service, Kandy for next decade is to bring up better citizens through right attitudes by providing necessary guidance and working environment to improve students' attitude.

Dr. Nilam said, "It is very unfortunate that in present society the volunteers are not getting the expected dignity and as a result it is very hard to run these institutions and finding devoted people to lead is more difficult as people are always moving towards money. Dr. Nilam conveyed his gratitude towards his officers and all others those who devoted to keep running this institution for the service of mankind for over 25 years in Central Province.

Brigadier, St. John Ambulance Service, Dr. Jayatilake, Director of Education, Gampola, H. A. Chandrasena and the Principal, Mahanama College, Kandy also spoke.
