by Gunadasa Jayawickrema - Galewela group correspondent Mahesh Lakmal Bandara Wijekoon, a 14-year-old student in Grade 9 at Siyambalagahawela Junior School has born with stiff arms. He cannot lift them. He is dependent on his grandmother for everything from washing himself to combing his hair. He lives with his grand parents at Siyambalagahawela. His father committed suicide when his mother was pregnant. She left him when he was just one year old and married for the second time leaving the child in her mother's custody. This unfortunate invalid's grand father is 75 years old with high blood pressure. The grandmother is 72 years old suffering from rheumatism and asthma. Their only income is a monthly allowance of Rs. 410 from the Department of Social Services. The doctors who examined this boy have recommended him to undergo physio-therapy, but owing to financial difficulties he has not been able to attend the clinics regularly. Although born with defective limbs he can write and draw. He is clever and interested in education. When his old grandparents are no more this boy has nowhere to go. A special institution capable of providing the necessary treatment physio-therapy and education should undertake to adopt this boy. It is worth while making some efforts to bring him back to normality if possible. Anybody willing to assist this boy could contact his grandfather at the following address: William Banda, Siyambalagahawela, Wahacotte. |
