Felicitation ceremony for young girl volunteer teachers from England

by Gunadasa Jayawickrema - Galewela group correspondent

Two young English girls who spent one month of their summer vacation volunteering to teach English to the farmers' hamlets off Galewela Akuramboda-Matale road were very emotionally moved at the farewell programs held to felicitate them. They attempted to hide from the audience wiping tears from time to time. They were able to witness themselves how rapidly the students picked-up the English, the two foreign volunteers taught them.

The students made brief speeches,m recited poems, sang songs and staged playlets. A cross-section of the village folk, students and teachers also were present to bid-farewell to the young English girls who extended a wonderful service by creating an interest to learn English among the poor and under privileged students.

In addition to the teaching they were able to build very cordial relationship not only with the students but also with all members of the community. Ven. Lenadora Soratha Thera Chief Incumbent of the Mananwatte Bodhiraja Viharaya, Assistant Education Director Buddhist Studies attached to Galewela Zonal Education office was the chief guest at the felicitation program held at Neerangamuwa junior school.

Ven. Silwathgama Rathanasara Thera, principal of the school thanked Miss Sophie McCabe for devoting her time and energy to create interest in the students to learn English which was a far cry for most of the rural children.

Schools English assistant Tharanganee Thilakarathne presented a variety cultural program aimed at giving basic understanding about the up-country dance to the two foreign ladies.

Miss K. E. G. Chandanee volunteer teacher teaching English for four years at Ebbawala Primary School organised and presented a colourful concert to entertain Miss Elizabeth Firey who taught English to her students. Miss McCabe and large number of students teachers and villagers were present.

Ebbawala primary school principal A. G. Bisomenike spoke in English briefly and said that as a tribute to the British volunteer teacher she made an attempt to speak in the language understood by her. When students learn English very keenly as teachers she and her staff members also made efforts to gain some knowledge in this international language, the key to the world knowledge. The main feature of the concert was that most of the items were produced in the English medium.

There were two tea-parties at both schools.

The students presented memento to the two foreign teachers.
