Rice from Pakistan Trade Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle yesterday decided to import rice from Pakistan in a move to arrest the frequent increase in the price of rice in the local market. The minister finalised plans for the import of rice at a meeting he had with the Pakistan Ambassador Bashir Wali Mohammed at the Minister's Office at the Sathosa Secretariat in Colombo. As the Pakistan ambassador agreed to extend his support to the minister, an agreement was reached to import the necessary rice stocks from Pakistan by the end of October. Minister Fernandopulle told the Daily News that he was compelled to import rice from Pakistan to ease the burden on the consumers due to the high price of rice. The minister said, steps would be taken to store rice consignments in warehouses once they were imported from Pakistan. They will be released to the local market if the upward trend of rice prices continue. |
