Special IDs for Bhikkhus :

JHU supports Govt decision

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) General Secretary Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera yesterday declared the JHU's support to a decision by the Government to issue special identity cards to Buddhist monks.

Ven. Dhammaloka thera said, "We are pleased to note that the Ministry of Buddha Sasana had come up with a programme to issue special ID cards to members of the Maha Sangha."

The Secretary of Buddha Sasana Ministry, D. W. Abeywickreme said they had launched this program in association with the Department of Registration of Persons to protect the dignity of Maha Sangha against imposters.

There are about 31,100 Buddhist monks in the country, according to data available to the ministry.

The Ven. Dhammaloka Thera said it was an essential program which will enable the Buddhist monks to establish their authenticity as Bikkhus and relieve them of having to face unnecessary problems in having to prove their identity in the absence of National ID cards.
