by Ranil Wijayapala A soldier was wounded in Kayankerni, Batticaloa yesterday as suspected LTTE cadres opened fire on a foot patrol, Military Spokesman Colonel Sumedha Perera told the Daily News yesterday. The incident occurred around 12 noon. This is the second attack on military personnel by suspected LTTE cadres following the killing of two senior LTTE members including former Ampara district political wing leader 'Bhava' in a claymore mine attack in the same area on Friday by a suspected rival LTTE group. The soldier injured in the attack was admitted to the Polonnaruwa hospital. Troops found a diary with the LTTE emblem on it and an LTTE cap badge at the place of the attack, Perera added. Troops have reportedly identified three suspected LTTE cadres clad in black who had fired upon them and then disappearing into jungle, sources added. An Army officer and a soldier were also injured on Saturday in a hand grenade attack by suspected LTTE cadres in the Kayankerni area. Asked about the situation in the East Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland said they were daily receiving complaints of killings and shooting in the East. "The SLMM is concerned about this. This is a bad situation. We are inquiring into these incidents," Haukland added. |
