LKLUG to Celebrate the Free / Open Source Software Day

Free Software, also known as Open Source Software, is arguably the greatest phenomenon happening in the computing world today. They are also known as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

FOSS enthusiasts around the world are celebrating the Software Freedom day on the 28th of August. Lanka Linux User Group (LKLUG), premier organization in Sri Lanka for promoting FOSS, is planning to join these celebrations by organizing a get together of its members.

The Group invites all those who are interested in FOSS and join LKLUG to attend this event from 9 am to 12 noon at Mahaweli Center Auditorium.

LKLUG is a loosely knit non profit organization, which is operating as a virtual community on the Internet, having more than 450 members on its active mailing lists.

Activities of LKLUG are complimented by the Tux Group of the MettaNet Foundation at Narada Center, 380/9 Sarana Road.

This group is planning to set up a Open Source Software Service Center, where one can call in and get free help on Open Source Software or get service personal to visit your office or home, providing specialist Open Software services.

LKLUG and Tux Group recently hosted a stall at the e-Society Exhibition to bring awareness to Open Source / Free Software.

The stall was crowded throughout the exhibition, and accroding to the members of the LKLUG and Tux Group, it was a huge success. The Groups were sponsored by Virtusa (Pvt) Ltd.

Internet infrastructure of LKLUG is run on a server hosted at the University of Peradeniya. It contains a Web site, CVS / Subversion, Wiki and more importantly the mailing lists and archives.

Lanka Linux User Group was founded in 1998, and most of its founding members has been running GNU/Linux since 1993.

The word `free' in `Free Software' means `freedom' as in `free speech' and not as in `free lunch'. It's not about giving away software free of charge, but giving everyone the freedom to use, modify and distribute them.
