Effective September 1:

Agreement on bus fares

The Cabinet Sub-Committee appointed to negotiate with the representative of the bus operators and bus passenger societies reached the following agreement at Temple Trees yesterday.

Deputy Minister of Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna in a press release states the bus fares revision proposed by the National Transport Commission will be implemented from September 1 with the change that the first stage increase proposed as Rs. 3.00 increasing to Rs. 4.00 is amended as increasing only to Rs. 3.50. The overall fare revision is nine per cent.

It was also decided that the National Bus Fares Policy would be amended as required and tabled in Parliament in due course so that the interest of the passengers as well as the bus operators would be safeguarded within the policy.

It was also agreed that the Government would intervene to relieve the bus operators from external influences they have to face in operating buses such as the payment of unauthorised fees at bus terminals and also to improve the quality of service provided to the passenger. The bus operators would also assist in this program.

The following members of the Cabinet Sub-Committee participated at the discussion. Dinesh Gunawardena, A.H.M. Fowzie, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the convener of the meeting Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna.
