Kiran Bedi guest of honour at book fair

One of India's most celebrated woman Dr. Kiran Bedi, former Inspector General of Prisons, Punjab State in India will arrive in Sri Lanka to participate in the book launching of her biography on September 4 at the Taj Samudra Hotel.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse will be the chief guest. Minister Vijitha Herath will also participate.

She became the first ever woman Inspector General, when she was appointed Inspector General, Tihar Prison in New Delhi which has 8,000 to 9,000 mainly male prisoners. Bedi who is serving as a UN special representative in USA is being flown here by Samayawardhana Publishers to mark the publication of the Sinhala translation of her biography I Dare written by Parmesh Dangwal. W. S. Wijesingha is the translator.

She will be a special guest at the sixth Colombo International Book Fair which will be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall and at the new Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre from September 6 to 12 from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Dr. Arthur C. Clarke who will be the chief guest will inaugurate the exhibition along with Bedi and Tony O'Brian, Director, British Council, Sri Lanka and Prof. A.V. Suraweera, Chairman, National Education Commission (NEC).

Last year, Indian author Shoba De was a guest of honour at the fair.

Over 50 foreign publishers from India, Malaysia, UK and USA will participate in the book fair. According to the Chairman of Sri Lanka Book Publishers' Association, Sarath Chandra Wanniachchi, there will be 255 stalls which is a 60 per cent increase over the last year.

There will be more than 200 book launches during the one week fair. Meanwhile, singer Nanda Malini will also launch her latest audio cassette Anda Heraya at the outdoor stadium of the BMICH on September 6 at 7.15 pm.
