New fine payment method for traffic offenders by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Motor traffic offenders in the future will have to pay their fines directly to the nearest Police station and not at the Post Office as they do now, IGP Indra de Silva said yesterday. The IGP speaking at a media briefing yesterday at the Police Headquarters expressed confidence that the new method of payment would be convenient to the public as they could obtain their licence within 24 hours. This payment system will be a welcome move as the Police station is open all days without exception unlike the Post Office which closes half day on Saturdays and full day on Sundays, the IGP said. Citing an example, Director Traffic SSP Lucky Peiris said in the event a person living in Colombo is caught by Kekirawa Police committing an offence on his way to Anuradhapura, whatever the day of the week, he need not worry as he only has to pay the fine at the Kekirawa Police, as he was caught in the Police jurisdiction of Kekirawa. He also can have his licence back, he said. Colombo Traffic Director SSP J. G. R. M. Lafir elaborating on the new payment system said motorist violating traffic laws will have to pay the fine to the Officer-in-Charge of the Administration branch police who co-ordinates with the mobile traffic patrol. Under the new system, it is expected that a percentage from the fine will be given to the officer as an encouragement to nab more offenders, SSP Lafir added. |
