President formulated a broadbased program for lasting peace - Vasudeva

by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

A broadbased programme of work was necessary to create lasting peace in the country and it was President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who formulated such a programme during the early stages.

"Sudu Nelum" and "Thawalama" were some programmes initiated under the leadership of the President, said General Secretary of the Prajathantravadi Eksath Peramuna, Vasudeva Nanayakkara at a meeting in Kandy recently.

He was speaking at a seminar by Manawa Sangwardhana Sanvidhanaya on "Your Human Rights Devolution of Power" at Ratnasiri Wickramanayake Training Centre at Hanthana, Kandy recently.

Rights of the minority communities had been ignored or overlooked in the drafting of constitutions of 1972 and 1978 which resulted in aggravating the ethnic conflict.

Prof. A. Sivaraja of Department of Political Science, Peradeniya University, Sumanasiri Liyanage, of the Department of Economics, Thilani Rajapakse Director of the Jathika Manawa Himikam Commission and P.P. Sivapragasam also spoke.
