Social Services Ministry refutes allegations Social Services Director W. Yamuna Chitrangani has rejected the allegation made by some sections of the press that she as the Social Services Director has said that the Treasury has not provided money to meet the drought and help the affected families. "This is completely false. The Treasury or the Social Services Director has not made a statement that the Treasury has no money to provide assistance to people affected by the drought". In her statement to the press, the Social Services Director has stated that 584,246 families in 17 districts are affected by the prevailing drought. The Department responding to requests by District Secretaries for assistance to provide food and drinking water to the affected families got the approval of the Cabinet to release Rs.708 million. This was possible because of the keen interest shown by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Sumedha Jayasena as Minister in charge. The Treasury had released Rs.200 million on August 19. This was sent to 12 districts to meet the needs of the affected families. The Ministry at a media conference released the details of the prevailing situation and the steps taken by the Ministry in this regard. Subsequently on August 26, the Treasury released Rs.375 million to the Ministry. These funds were sent to the respective district secretaries. The Ministry also gave another Rs.30 million to provide drinking water to the affected families. |
