Only few Lankan websites present balance information - Mangala by Anjana Gamage Sri Lankan academics who have formed an organisation called University Teachers for Peace and Democracy (UTPD) launched its newest website - www.lankanet.info at the BMICH yesterday to promote and strengthen peace and democratic values in Sri Lanka. Minister of Ports Aviation, Information and Media Mangala Samaraweera, Members of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa and Mahinda Samarasinghe, former Minister A.H.M. Azwer, Prof. Granville Dharmawardena and Dr. Aniz of the Colombo University and Raja Gooneratne of the Open University participated as guests of honour at the official launching ceremony. Minister Samaraweera said there are several websites in the country that provide information about Sri Lanka worldwide, but only a very few present balance and unbiased information on Sri Lanka. "Many websites are managed by NGOs to fulfil their own needs. Therefore, at a time like this, it is vital that the university academics have come forward with a website displaying accurate, balance information about Sri Lanka", he said. Prof. Dharmawardena said sometimes even diplomats fail to present a correct picture to a large international community due to the bias data provided by some websites. "The sole aim of the UTPD website is to present true, unbiased facts on Sri Lanka", he said. Dr. Aniz said peace was the most vital need of the hour. "Peace cannot be achieved only through politics. Every citizen in this country should support the peace process," he said. MPs Weerawansa and Samarasinghe and Goonaratne also spoke. |
