Sarvodaya will launch 'National Ahimsa Week' from September 15 - 21. The 'National Ahimsa Week' was being organised to culminate on United Nation's International Day of Peace, which falls on September 21 each year, Sarvodaya President Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne told a news conference at the BMICH. Sarvodaya is a national partner and co-ordinator of the UN International Day of Peace together with other organisations in Sri Lanka and around the world. The International Day of Peace came into being following a United Nations Proclamation in 1981 aimed at commemorating and strengthening ideals of peace both within and among all nations of the world. This year, the United Nations, governments, states, cities, groups, organisations and citizens aim to inspire more than one billion people to be involved in Peace Day activities on September 21. He said: "We live in turbulent times where violence and killing have literally become a lifestyle in Sri Lanka. While eroding the very foundations on which civil society is built, this has a tremendous impact on the consciousness of our children and teenagers." A highlight of the observances will be a Peace Meditation Campaign on September 21 on the grounds of the BMICH, at which over 250,000 people are expected. |
