by Wijayani Edirisinghe and Premakumara Rajapakse A gang of six robbers including the gang leader alleged to have been involved in a spate of bank robberies and robberies of business establishments for more than eight months in Colombo and its suburbs were arrested by Moratuwa police on Wednesday night. Police arrested the robbers at Tissamaharama while planning to leave the island. On interrogation, police recovered Rs. 30 million in cash and 11 vehicles, pistols, T56 rifles, cartridges, hand grenades and cellular phones used in the robberies. Among the arrested was the kingpin in the crimes. The gang was suspected to have operated under the direction of its leaders supposed to be residents of South. They were alleged to have robbed about 14 banks and other business establishments in Moratuwa, Maharagama, Dehiwala, Malabe, Battaramulla, Ratmalana, Mount-Lavinia, Wellawatte and Panadura. On the instructions of DIG P. Pathirana and under the Supervision of ASP Roshan Silva Moratuwa HQI Nimal Ratnayaka, IP Manoj Gunasekera, SI Indunil and SI Dhammika Nandsena, PS Prasanna Perera and P.Cs. Dharmasiri, Bandara and Weerasekara conducted the raid to arrest the suspects. |
