Jinasena Ltd to renovate 100 tanks

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Jinasena Limited, one of the country's pioneering local agriculture equipment companies, will renovate 100 tanks this year parallel to the Government's Dahasak Maha Wev (1,000 tanks) project.

The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) under its Dahasak Maha Wev project has designed to revive and rehabilitate 10,000 tanks throughout the country during the next four years. Of this total, 1,000 tanks will be renovated during 2004, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

Jinasena Limited Chief Tissa Jinasena and his family members have pledged Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake that their company would extend their fullest cooperation towards the Government's nation building exercise and renovate 100 tanks in addition to the 1,000 tanks selected by the Government for renovation this year.

Jinasena Ltd has selected to renovate these 100 tanks to mark its centenary celebrations which will fall next year. The renovation of all these tanks will be completed by next year, he said.

He said Jinasena Ltd initially commenced the reconstruction work of these 100 tanks from Anuradhapura district on Thursday. The reconstruction of five tanks in Anuradhapura named Kalakola weva, Kirimatiyawa weva, Mahakadiyama weva, Kaputuliyan weva and Nabadagas weva started on Thursday.

Of the 1,000 tanks to be rehabilitated by the Government this year, the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry has already commenced the renovation of 550 tanks.

The Ministry's target is to complete the renovation of 750 tanks by the end of this month, he said. Due to steady progress achieved by the Dahasak Maha Wev project, a large number of institutions, private sector donors and the public have extended their support to make this a success, he said.
