| News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Govt's new education system will support country's development process Ja-Ela group correspondent The technical knowledge obtained through school education and reading books or by viewing exhibitions of this nature would not suffice to become a scientist, said Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Minister of Science and Technology at the occasion of opening the train containing various items of science and technology contributed by various government departments and corporations at the Ja-Ela railway station. He said that there are many shortcomings in our educational system. A country cannot be developed by an educational system based only on books. He said that President Chandrika Kumaratunga has understood these shortcomings and has initiated a new educational system that would support the country's development process. Prof. Vitharana said that the poverty crops up when there was no knowledge of technology. In 1977 though technology was brought, it only helped to develop the garment industry. He said the technology that would support the development of the country should be introduced by the country's universities. He further said that there are students who are clever and talented in our universities. Felix Perera, Minister of Transport said that it is a good thing to revive this technology train for the benefit of the children. The government has appointed the most appropriate persons as the Minister of Science and Technology. He said that he has proposed to the Science Minister to manufacture a train and which the minister accepting the request has already initiated the work to build a train in this country. S. W. Rajapakse, Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology and N. A. N. D. Wijewardene, Director of Education, Negombo region also spoke. |
