England strong contender for ICC trophy

Comment by Elmo Rodrigopulle

England who are making a desperate attempt to win the ICC Champions Trophy, put their hopes on rail crushing the hapless Zimbs by 152 runs in their first game that went into the reserve day at Edgbaston. England who have figured in three World Cup finals, have not been able to savour the success of winning the ultimate in one-day cricket the coveted World Cup.

It will be somewhat of a calamity for their game and its progress if they cannot lay their hands on this trophy.

England led by Michael Vaughan, have enjoyed one of their best seasons and if they continue in the same form, could certainly be a formidable opponent. Andrew Flintoff, their all-rounder has added muscle to their performances, and although failing with the bat against the Zims, came off successfully with the ball.

Beckham another boy

David Beckham, England's pin up boy in soccer and his wife Victoria are expecting their third child which is also expected to be a boy. The couple already have two boys Brooklyn and Romeo.

Beckham was hated by England soccer fans sometime back for missing a penalty in a match in the Euro soccer finals held in Greece. They wanted a sister for their two sons, but this won't be so. A Sterling Pound 200 3 D scan in a London clinic showed that the pregnant mother would have a baby boy.

The scan is so advanced it can detect a blink of the unborn baby's eye and easily tell the child's gender. Fondly called Posh, and husband Beckham, recently moved into their new Sterling Pound 3 million home in a smart Madrid suburb. Talk doing the rounds here is that Posh and Bavid might name their new arrival Juan-Neil.

Cricketer Read attacked

Chris Read, the England wicket keeper was the victim of a terrifying attack by armed raiders who broke into his home and threatened him and the family.

Read was with his fiancee and his parents when the robbers held him at gun point. According to Read, the robbers were after his prized high performance Ford Focus Rally Sports.

This particular car does 144 mph and cost Read Sterling Pound 20,000, Ford no longer makes this car.

USA no match

The USA who did well to beat Zimbabwe in a friendly game in the ICC Champions Trophy, were absolutely no match for the rampaging New Zealanders, whose batsmen Astle, Styris and McMillan who slaughtered the attack.

USA who did well to enter this tourney are packed with nine West Indians, 4 Pakistanis and 1 Indian. The better known cricketer in their ranks is former West Indian batsman Clayton Lambert. A left hander with a funny stance - he faces mid wicket - is the only player to watch.

Kiwi batsman Nathan Astle gave a fine exhibition of batting and the massive unbeaten 145 he made would be hard to surpass in this tourney.

Indians unconvincing

The Indians who are also in the race for the trophy, started their campaign with victory over Kenya at the Rose Bowl which was not convincing. While Ganguly, Laxman and Kaif were in the runs, they could not dismiss the Kenyans, although Pathan and Harbhajan were among the wickets.
