Eastern Province athletes for National Run for Peace

Top athletes from three leading towns of the Eastern Province - Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Kalmunai will take part in the National Run for Peace which will be worked off from September 24 to 26.

The run is being organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme to support Sri Lanka's peace process and to bring about goodwill and understanding between Sri Lanka's two main communities.

40 runners from Trincomalee and 20 each from Batticaloa and Kalmunai will join the run after a colourful opening ceremony in which balloons will be released, peace flame will be lit and the peace song will be sung. The runners will be led by a top sportsman each from the three towns and two District Sports Officers each will join the run in a symbolic gesture.

The runners from Trincomalee will stay overnight at Habarana while the runners from Kalmunai and Batticaloa will be put up at Uhana and Teldeniya respectively before resuming the run on the following day.

The District Sports Officers and the two co-ordinators for the Eastern Province - Lennart Jensen from Porta Westfalica, Germany and Juliette Oppel from Dusseldorf, Germany who are volunteers attached to AGSEP will provide the maximum support for the runners. A record number of 480 runners will take part in the run which will end at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy on September 26 (Sunday) with a grand closing ceremony at which the peace song will be sung by the runners and pigeons will be released as a symbol of peace.
