Poverty alleviation through self-help

The editorial, which appeared in the Daily News of August 19, titled 'Self-help through Gemi Diriya, highlighted a very important concept pertaining to poverty alleviation. Times have changed, and it is important to look at social services or welfare programmes with a different paradigm. Gemi Diriya emphasises the strengths or the efforts of the people, which have to be maximised to enable them to move out of poverty.
